Brown bagging your lunch doesn’t mean that you have to hide or eat it on the sly at your desk where no one can see you. Taking your own lunch to work can save hundreds, even thousands a year, even more for an average family.

With an economy as it is, now may be the best time to introduce your family, and even your co-workers to the concept of a brown bag lunch. Who cares if you get a few inquisitive looks, after a few weeks I bet that you begin to see a few more co-workers joining you in brown bagging their own lunch.

Of course, brown bagging it doesn’t mean that you can’t have some really good menu items. It can be as basic as a pressed turkey sandwich, side of cottage cheese and some fresh or canned fruit. Leftover rotisserie chicken and some chips or a slice or two of pizza from the night before also make great lunchables. No one said you have to make it yourself to be a brown bag lunch. In our family I try to limit sandwiches to one or two days a week, usually tuna or chicken salad because it’s lowest in fats and highest in protein, always on whole wheat.

Spin it up some and think outside the box. Garlic shrimp pasta, chicken alfredo linguine, with a small piece of garlic bread and maybe some green beans. Sandwiches are great, economical and quick but can easily lead to slacking back into old lunch habits once you become bored again.

We tend to make just a bit extra of our more favorite dinner-lunch items so that it’s already packed and ready for the following day. No one in our family ‘wakes up’ until well after were at school or work, preparing lunch in the morning over breakfast would be insane.

Try taking a lunch to work for 5 days and you will be hooked, your kids might take a little convincing but after a short while will come to appreciate and even look forward to what’s for lunch.
